Caring for your chamois throughout its life is the best way to ensure it is doing its job by providing protection and comfort as you ride. Doing so also helps extend the time you can rely on your chamois. The most important factor is your washing technique. When done properly, it will lengthen the life of your chamois and avoid the proliferation of potential bacterial infections under the saddle. Check out these five simple tips to keep your chamois going as long as you do.
- DON'T wash in high heat.
The recommended temperature for machine washing is 30°C/86°F on the delicate cycle. - DON'T use strong detergent or fabric softeners.
Detergents can cause damage to synthetic fibers and the elastic around the waistband and leg bands. As much as possible, use neutral and non-aggressive detergents. Also, avoid using softeners as they could reduce the lift of the foams. Fabric softeners coat garments with a stain-blocking film that gives a softer feel, but this film clogs up the breathability features of synthetic and wool fibers. - DO wash after every ride.
Remember to wash your bibs straight after your ride. When you have been pedaling for long hours, your sweat is absorbed into your shorts regardless of weather conditions. Unfortunately, this makes them a perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria. If you have been riding in the mud or extreme weather, it is best to hand wash your chamois first before putting it in the washing machine. Doing so can help ensure your pad is clean and bacteria-free. - DO turn your garments inside out.
Turn your bibs or shorts inside out when washing and avoid wadding them up in the hamper if you’re not able to wash them right away. Giving them room to breathe will prevent them from stinking as the side that has more skin and sweat contact airs out. This is also the reason why it is recommended to remove your chamois immediately after a ride. - DO hang them up to dry.
Rather than using a heated setting on the dryer, it is best to line dry any fabric cycling gear. However, if you are in a rush or need a last resort option, use the dryer on no or low heat.
